Unplug, Unwind, and Explore: The Wild Beauty of the San Juan Beaches

While Curaçao is famous for its vibrant beach clubs and crystal-clear turquoise bays, there is another side to the island—one that remains raw, wild, and untouched. If you are looking to escape the crowds, connect with nature, and experience a true off-the-beaten-path adventure, the secluded beaches of the San Juan Plantation belong at the top of your island bucket list.

Nestled along the northwestern coast, San Juan is home to a collection of quiet, pristine coves: Playa Manzaliña, Playa Shon Mosa, Playa Largu, and Playa Chiki. With no commercial resorts, no lounge chair rentals, and zero noise, San Juan offers an authentic sanctuary where you can slow down and immerse yourself in the island’s natural beauty.

The Journey: An Adventure in Itself

Getting to the San Juan beaches is half the fun. The adventure begins as you turn off the main road and pass the historic Landhuis San Juan, a 17th-century plantation house steeped in local history.

At the entrance gate, you’ll pay a small cash fee ( $6 USD / 10 XCG per vehicle) to access the private estate roads. From there, asphalt gives way to rugged dirt tracks winding through lush, cacti-dotted terrain. A higher-clearance vehicle or SUV is recommended—especially after rain—as you navigate the bumps, turns, and shaded tree tunnels leading to the coast.

The San Juan Coves: What to Expect

Each beach along the San Juan shoreline has its own unique character, linked by scenic coastal paths and framed by dramatic limestone cliffs:

  • Playa Hundu: Meaning “Deep Beach” in Papiamentu, this rugged cove is a hidden gem for underwater lovers. Just a short swim from the shore lies a dramatic drop-off reef, making it one of the island’s premier spots for shore diving and deep snorkeling.
  • Playa Manzaliña: Often considered the centerpiece of San Juan, this cozy cove features soft sand, calm waters, and shady trees. It’s the perfect spot to lay out a blanket, open a cold drink, and enjoy a peaceful picnic with friends.
  • Playa Shon Mosa: this intimate, 12-meter-wide cove is framed by striking rock formations and lush greenery. It’s a favorite launch spot for divers and snorkelers seeking untouched marine ecosystems.
  • Playa Largu: A wider, pebble-and-coral shore that feels completely deserted. The rustling sea breeze and crashing waves make it a serene space for meditation, reading, or quiet reflection.
